The fall 2023 issue showcases undergraduate poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, visual art and a faculty spotlight featuring the work of Steven Sherrill, professor of English and integrative arts.
Erin Murphy, professor of English at Penn State Altoona, has published two new poems in the international journal The Ilanot Review. Murphy’s poems “In Case of Emergency” and “Conceived” are included in a themed issue on parents.
The deadline for submitting work to “Hard Freight,” Penn State Altoona’s student literary arts magazine, has been extended to Thursday, Nov. 9, at midnight.

Hard Freight Café, an open mic event, will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in the Titelman Study of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. Attendees are invited to read or perform their own work or music or share a favorite piece of poetry or prose. Participants will be invited to sign up at the beginning of the program.
Steve Sherrill, professor of English and integrative arts at Penn State Altoona, will read from his new nonfiction book, “Motorcycles, Minotaurs, and Banjos: A Modest Odyssey," at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in the Titelman Study of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. The reading will kick off the fall Hard Freight Café open mic event.
Todd Davis's poem, "The Kingdom of God Is Like This," was featured on an episode of “Poetry Moment,” a weekly show on WPSU, Penn State's NPR affiliate. Davis is a professor of English and environmental studies at Penn State Altoona.
